Call for Abstracts


The 43rd Australian and New Zealand Annual Scientific Meeting on Intensive Care and the 24th Annual Paediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Conference invites submissions from those interested in presenting oral papers, oral posters and static posters.

The theme of the meeting is “Finding the Forest through the Trees” and will focus on holistic care, looking at all the systems not just the finer details.

Submission Process

Abstract Submission has closed

To be selected to present you are required to submit an abstract online. All abstracts must be submitted electronically. Faxed or hard copy submissions will not be accepted.

The deadline for submission of abstracts closed on Monday 9 July 18:30 ACST.

All presenters must register to attend the ASM. Acceptance of abstracts into the program is contingent upon receipt of the registration fee. Notification of abstract acceptance in early August 2018 will give presenters the opportunity to take advantage of the early-bird registration rate.


Abstract Guidelines


Please read the guidelines below carefully. Abstracts not submitted in this format may not be considered for review. If you have any difficulties or queries about the abstract format, please contact the ASM Secretariat by email

  • Only abstracts submitted in English will be reviewed.

  • Abstracts are to be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.doc or .docx) only via the ASM website, and in the specified format – please refer to the sample abstract template.

  • Text should be single spaced throughout, in Arial 10-point font.

  • Text within the body of the abstract should contain subheadings contained within the paragraph, not on a separate line: Introduction, Objective(s), Methods, Results and Conclusion(s).

  • Abstracts must have a maximum of 300 words. Word count does not include title or address; all numbers are included in the word count. Word count is verified using Microsoft Word.

  • Abstracts should not have been published in any English language medical or nursing peer reviewed journal, and in general should not have been presented at more than one meeting from which such publications arise. Studies with substantial changes in methodology and/or with substantial additional data may be submitted, presented and published a second time, but rewritten abstracts on the same study should not.

  • Each abstract will only be eligible for one (1) award only.

  • Each abstract must nominate the preferred journal for publication – Australian Critical Care or Anaesthesia and Intensive Care or no journal publication. Only one journal may be selected. Australian Critical Care must be selected as the journal if applying for Best Adult Nursing Free Paper, Best Paediatric or Neonatal Nursing Free Paper, Best Nursing Poster or Best Nursing Review Paper.

Abstract headings should contain the following:

  • Title in BLOCK CAPITALS throughout.

  • Wherever possible the title should be precise so that it conveys a message – eg “High Dose Adrenaline does not Improve In-Hospital Survival from Cardiac Arrest”.

  • One-line space prior to text commencement.

Please note that a blind review process will be conducted. You will be asked to provide author names and affiliations in the online submission process (authors must be listed in order of involvement), however please do not include this information on your Word document abstract.

Abstracts should contain brief but complete statements of:

  • Introduction

  • Study objectives

  • Methods

  • Results

  • Conclusion(s)

  • The text should not contain statements alluding to results or conclusions not presented in the text; abstracts stating, “will be discussed”, “will be described” or “will be presented” will be rejected.

  • Abstracts should be written in the past tense, stating what was done, not what is being, should or will be done.

  • Use only standard abbreviations (“Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts submitted to Biomedical Journals”). Non-standard abbreviations should be kept to a minimum and defined in parentheses in the text. In general, no more than 2 non-standard abbreviations should be used and should only be used to replace words appearing 4 times or more in the text. Use International System of Units except for pressure; use cmH2O or mmHg with kPa units in brackets (optional).

  • Abstracts containing graphs, diagrams, or tables will not be accepted.

  • References are not to be included.

Abstracts received after the closing date will not be accepted.

It is the responsibility of the submitting author to view and proof the PDF file to ensure your abstract has been uploaded successfully.


Presentation Guidelines


Free Paper/Oral Presentations

  • Oral presentations will be 10 minutes in duration plus 5 minutes discussion. Times will be strictly enforced by chairpersons and presentations in excess of 10 minutes may be ineligible for an award.

  • PowerPoint Presentations should be made to the ratio of 16:9. This can be altered in page setup.

  • At least 2 hours prior to your first session, please take your presentation on a USB stick to the Speakers' Preparation Room (Riverbank 1). The AV technicians will load it onto the Meeting PCs and return your USB stick.

  • Please take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with your session venue (details will be in the Meeting App and Website) and audio visual equipment at some stage before you are scheduled to speak.

  • Presenters should arrive at their session room at least 10 minutes prior to session commencement in order to introduce themselves to the chairperson, familiarise themselves with the audio-visual facilities and check their presentation.

Abstract Resources

Poster Presentations

  • Posters must be portrait size A0 841mm wide x 1189mm high.

  • Poster boards will be Velcro compatible. Please bring the hook side of Velcro with you to attach your poster to the board.

  • There is limited space in the Poster Display area and Posters that are produced landscape are unable to be accommodated.

  • Authors must prepare all posters beforehand in a form enabling easy mounting.

  • Posters will be on display from the Thursday Morning Break, until Afternoon Break on Saturday. You are requested to hang your poster before 1100hrs on Thursday 11 Oct.

  • Posters should be typed in clear bold print that can be easily read from distances over one metre with the title displayed in block capitals of minimum size 25mm (1″) at the top of the poster. The title should also display the names of the author(s) and the institution(s) of origin.

  • Remaining contents may be displayed in columns (usually 2 columns).

  • Contents should contain the study background, objective(s), methods, results and conclusion(s).

  • Illustrations should be professionally drawn (hand drawn material will not be accepted).

  • All contents should be simple and not overburdened with detail – “minimising detail maximises information transfer”.

  • Authors may provide handout material relating to their poster.

  • Please make time during breaks to visit your poster and answer any questions and discuss your poster with viewers.

Poster Viewing

Poster presentation will take place at the below times during lunch breaks:

Poster Numbers 1-28, 30, 38, 57, 73 - Thursday 11 Oct 1330-1430
Poster Numbers 29-52 - Friday 12 Oct 1200-1300
Poster Numbers 53-78 - Saturday 13 Oct 1315-1400

Instructions for abstract submission

  • To register your abstract you need to have the following information:

    • Title

    • Preferred presentation type (oral or poster)

    • The award you wish to submit for (see next section for details)

    • A biography of up to 50 words on the presenting author. These details can be amended up to the abstract submission closing date.

  • After completing the online form, you will be prompted to ‘Upload new or revised abstract’.

  • Select ‘Browse’ to locate the abstract file on your computer.

  • Select ‘Upload Abstract’.

  • Once you have completed the abstract submission process you will receive a confirmation email.

1. Best Medical Free Paper
The primary author must be the presenter and must be medical.

2. Matt Spence Medal
The primary author must be the presenter and must be a financial trainee ANZICS member. Authors may only submit one paper for consideration of the Matt Spence Medal. Authors who have previously received this award are not eligible for this award.

3. Best Paediatric Medical Paper
The primary author must be the presenter and must be medical.

4. Safety & Quality Best Paper
Awarded for the best free paper on safety and quality; may be medical, nursing or other author. Only awarded when suitable papers are submitted. The ANZICS Abstract Review Committee should recommend that the paper is suitable for this award.

5. Best Medical Poster
The primary author must be medical.

6. Best Adult Nursing Free Paper
The primary author must be a nurse, a member of ACCCN and present the paper. Verbal presentations only, presented during the adult component of the ASM, will be considered for this prize.

The primary author must be a nurse and a member of ACCCN. The paper may be of adult, paediatric or neonatal interest.

9. Best Allied Health Paper
Awarded for the best Allied Health Free Paper presentation of any discipline. The primary author must be the presenter.

10. Nursing Scholarship
Awarded for the best free paper based on research completed as a component of a Masters or PhD. The main author of the paper must be a nurse, a member of ACCCN and present the paper. The paper may be of adult, paediatric or neonatal interest. The paper must be presented as a free paper (10-minute oral presentation followed by 5 minutes for discussion).

Selection Criteria

Abstract selection will be based on clarity, scientific rigour, supporting data, significance, relevance, interest in the topic chosen, innovation and usefulness. The organising committee has the right to refuse or accept any submission, accept the submission as a poster or an oral presentation/free paper and allocate the paper to a different category than the one under which it as submitted.

Abstract Acceptance

Notification of acceptance will be provided to corresponding authors in early August 2018 which will give presenters the opportunity to take advantage of the early-bird registration rate. Abstract acceptance will oblige the presenting author to register and pay the appropriate registration fee to attend the conference to present their work.
