The Asia Pacific Critical Care 2008 Congress has been hailed a great success by all the participating organisations: ACCCN, ANZICS, AuSPEN and APACCM. The Congress attracted more than 1,750 delegates from regions as widespread as North America, the Middle East, Europe, Asia as well as Australia and New Zealand.

NURSING AWARD WINNERS
The winners of the 2008 ACCCN Experienced Investigator Award were Roslyn Elliott, S McKinley, P Cistuilli, S Ladanyi and T Buckley from the Royal North Shore Hospital and University of Technology Sydney for their paper "Improving the quality and quantity of sleep for intensive care patients".
The winners of the 2008 ACCCN Novice Investigator Award (1 of 2) were Jodie Kernick, J Margary and S Willis from the University of Adelaide and Royal Adelaide Hospital for their paper "High flow nasal oxygen or non-rebreather mask. A RCT".
The winners of the 2008 ACCCN Novice Investigator Award (2 of 2) were Kelly Foster and A Schibler from Mater Chuldren's Hospital Brisbane for their paper "Closed loop ventilation in paediatric patients".
The winners of the 2008 Hospira Research Grant were Judy Currey, T Bucknall, E Manias, D Pilcher and R Ruseckaite of Deakin University and The Alfred Hospital for their paper "Video analysis of interprofessional communication and decision making in intensive care".

The winners of the 2008 Best Medical Paper were Adam Deane, Marianne Chapman. Robert Fraser, Carly Burgstad. The winners of the 2008 ANZICS-CORE Best Young Researcher Paper were Gopal Taori, Kwok Ho, Carol George, Rinaldo Bellomo, Steven Webb and Graeme Hart for their paper "Landmark survival as an end-point for trials in critically ill patients: comparison of alternative durations of follow-up".
The winner of the 2008 ANZICS-CORE Best Publication Prize (using ANZICS-CORE data in the preceding 12 months) was John Moran for his paper "Mortality and length of stay outcomes in the Australian and New Zealand intensive care adult patient data base" published in Critical Care Medicine 2008; 36: 46-61.
The winners of the 2008 Safety and Quality Best Paper were Teresa Williams, Gavin Leslie, Robert Bingham, Maria Hopkinson and Linda Brearley from Royal Perth Hospital and Curtin University for their paper "Optimising seating for patients with impaired mobility in the ICU".

The winners of the 2008 Bob MacMahon Prize for Best Nutrition Paper were Adan Deane, Robert Fraser, Robert Young, Stephanie O'Connor and Marianne Chapman from the Royal Adelaide and Repatriation General Hospitals, Adelaide for their paper "The Cortrak enables reliable and rapid bedside placement of small intestinal feeding catheters in the ICU".
The winners of the 2008 David Russell Prize for the Best Nutritional Poster were Christine Hamiel, Ryan Beck, Alyssa Kalweit and P Wischmeyer from the University of Colorado, USA for their poster "Threonine treatment causes translocation of heat shock protein 25 and increases cell survival in heat stressed intestinal epithelial cells".
The winners of the IPaNEMA/AuSPEN Prize for Best Parenteral Nutrition Abstract were Janet Baxter and Lyn Gillanders of Nineweels Hospital, UK and Auckland City Hospital, NZ for their paper "A comparison of the quality of life between home parenteral nutrition patients in Scotland and New Zealand".
