Important information

All abstract submissions are to comply with the following guidelines. Submissions found not to be within the guidelines, including the word count, will not be reviewed and automatically declined for presentation.

Abstract guidelines

Abstracts should not have been published in any English language medical or nursing peer reviewed journal and in general should not have been presented at more than one meeting from which such publications arise. Studies with substantial changes in methodology and/or with substantial additional data may be submitted, presented and published a second time, but rewritten abstracts on the same study should not.

Abstracts should be of no more than 250 words (this does not include titles) and must be written in English. Abstracts must be submitted in Word format, 12 point Arial font, single spaced throughout and should not contain subheadings, underlines or bold type.

The abstract heading must contain:

  • Title in BLOCK CAPITALS only.
  • One line space prior to text commencement. Please note: as the abstracts will be blind reviewed, the names, institutions and contact details of the authors are NOT to be written on the abstract document. This information is to be provided when submitting the abstract online.
  • Wherever possible the title should be precise so that it conveys a message eg “High Dose Adrenaline Does Not Improve Survival In In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest”.
  • Any conflict of interest should be declared in the submission form. Intending presenters are advised to formally declare conflict of interest during the presentation.
  • Abstracts should contain brief but complete statements of Introduction/Study Objectives/Methods/Results/Conclusion(s). Please ensure these statements are not under sub headings.

Abstracts should be written in the past tense, i.e should state what was done, not what is being, should or will be done. The abstract must contain sufficient information so that if it is published in the proceedings of the ASM or in a journal, it will be a complete report independent of the presentation. The text should not contain statements alluding to results or conclusions not presented in the text; Abstracts stating “will be discussed”, “will be described” or “will be presented”, will be rejected.

Only standard abbreviations should be used. Nonstandard abbreviations should be kept to a minimum and defined in parentheses in the text. In general, no more than 2 non-standard abbreviations should be used and should only be used to replace words appearing 4 times or more in the text. Use SI units except for pressure; use cmH2O or mmHg with kPa units in brackets (optional).

Abstracts containing graphs, diagrams, or complex tables will be rejected. Simple tables are acceptable.

Any conflict of interest should be declared in the submission form.

References are not to be included.

Abstracts that do not adhere to the guidelines will not be accepted.

Abstracts received after the closure date will not be accepted.

The Committee may limit the number of presentations by any one person, organisation or institution in order to provide as many people as possible with the opportunity for presenting.

For proposals with more than one author, only one person should submit the abstract online, and this person will be the contact for all correspondence concerning the abstract with the Conference Office.

Authors must indicate on the abstract submission form the profession (e.g. medicine or nursing) of the primary author of the abstract.

Authors must indicate on the abstract submission form the profession (e.g. medicine or nursing) of the presenter of the abstract.

Authors must clearly indicate on the abstract submission form their desire to be considered for either a free paper presentation, a poster oral presentation or a static poster.
