All presenters must register to attend the conference. Acceptance of abstracts into the program is contingent upon receipt of the registration fee. Notification of abstract acceptance by 25 July, 2006 will give presenters the opportunity to take advantage of the early-bird registration rate.
Important Information
Posters
Posters will be displayed for the duration of the conference. Each poster will be allocated a 1-metre wide x 2-metres high board and the poster must fit within this area. The boards are covered in blue-grey front-runner material suitable for Velcro hooks, which will be supplied at the conference.
Free Paper Scoring System
When judging free paper presentations the following criteria are assessed and scored independently.
- Abstract Quality 0-10
- Quality of Study 0-15
Quantitative and Qualitative Study
- Work Involved 0-10
- Presentation 0-10
- Bonus Points 0-10

Publication of Abstracts
Anaesthesia and Intensive Care and Australian Critical Care will consider publishing accepted abstracts exactly as submitted, and should thus be checked for accuracy prior to submission. Authors must clearly indicate on the submission form the journal in which they wish their abstracts to be published.
Free Paper Prizes
Accepted abstracts may be eligible for one of the following prizes. The award of prizes is at the discretion of the judging panel and the Organising Committee. The value of each prize is at the discretion of the Organising Committee and the sponsor.
Eligibility for Free Paper Prizes
1) Best Medical Paper
Verbal or poster/oral presentations only will be considered. The primary author and presenting author must be medical. Maximum of 2 papers per presenting author is recommended.
2) Best Nursing Paper
Verbal or poster/oral presentations only will be considered. The primary author and presenting author must be a nurse.
3) Matt Spence Medal
Verbal presentations only will be considered. The primary author must be a registrar or fellow in an RACP or FICANZCA training program, must have an intensive care component in his/her training program and must be a provisional member of ANZICS. Candidates must have a major role in the design, execution, writing and presentation of the study.
4) Poster Prize
Dependent upon sponsorship a separate medical and nursing poster prize or single poster prize irrespective of authorship may be awarded
5) Nursing Scholarship Prize
Awarded for the best free paper based on research completed as a component of a Masters or PhD. Only verbal or poster/oral presentations will be considered.
6) Basic Science
Awarded for the best free paper on basic science; may be medical, nursing or other author. Only awarded when suitable papers are submitted.
7) Best Nursing Review Paper
Submissions reviewed and one paper selected for presentation by the ACCCN board prior to finalizing the program.
8) Best Paediatric Medical Paper
Verbal or poster/oral presentations only will be considered. The primary author and presenting author must be medical.
9) Best Paediatric Nursing Paper
Verbal or poster/oral presentations only will be considered. The primary author and presenting author must be a nurse.
Any paper reporting on basic research is eligible for Free Paper Prizes.
All Free papers will be judged on: abstract quality, methodological merit, work involved, standard of presentation and question handling, relevance, originality.
Nursing Prizes
Authors may nominate themselves for a prize. Each paper will be considered for one prize only. Nursing prize categories at the ASM are as follows:
The Best Nursing Paper may be awarded to the author of a paper presented during the adult component of the conference. The main author of the paper must also present the paper. The main author must be a nurse and must be a member of ACCCN.
The Nursing Scholarship Prize may be awarded to the author of a paper based on research completed as a component of a Masters or PhD. The main author of the paper must also present the paper. The main author must be a nurse and must be a member of ACCCN. The paper may be of adult, paediatric or neonatal interest. The paper must be presented as a free paper (10-minute oral presentation followed by 5 minutes for discussion).
The Best Paediatric or Neonatal Nursing Paper may be awarded to the author of a paper presented during the paediatric and neonatal component of the conference. The main author of the paper must also present the paper. The main author must be a nurse and must be a member of ACCCN.The paper must be presented as a free paper (10-minute oral presentation followed by 5 minutes for discussion).
The Best Nursing Poster may be awarded to the author of a paper presented as a poster. The main author must be a nurse and must be an ACCCN member. The paper may be of adult, paediatric or neonatal interest. The ACCCN Board coordinates judging of submissions for the Best Nursing Review Paper prior to the ASM according to guidelines developed by the ACCCN Board.
