Keynote International Speakers

Dr Jean-Michel Arnal, MD 
Hôpital Font Pré, Toulon, France

Dr Jean-Michel Arnal trained in medicine in Paris and in anaesthesia and medical intensive care in Marseille. He is now working as a senior staff specialist in Toulon. Jean-Michel published clinical research in critical ill patients, with his primary interest being in mechanical ventilation, ARDS, close loop ventilation and non-invasive ventilation in acute and chronic settings. He is doing a lot of training about monitoring of the mechanical ventilation and non-invasive ventilation.

Dr Carol Ball
Royal Free Hospital, London

Carol has worked in critical care since 1976, attaining her doctorate in 2000. Currently as a Consultant Nurse in Critical Care at the Royal Free Hospital, London her role expands across the three levels of critical care, including intensive care, high dependency and outreach services. She is also a Senior Research Fellow at City University, London. Recent research includes participation in a NIHR funded evaluation of critical care outreach services, the incidence of adverse events following transfer from ICU and the effectiveness of the ICU nurse liaison role in Australia.

Professor Ken Boffard
Johannesburg Hospital

Professor Ken Boffard is Head of the Department of Surgery at Johannesburg Hospital and the University of the Witwatersrand. He was President of the International Association for the Surgery of Trauma and Trauma Intensive Care, and is a past Governor of the American College of Surgeons. He is president-elect of the International Society of Surgery. He is a licensed fixed wing and helicopter pilot, and his interests include various aspects of surgical education, trauma resuscitation and care, trauma critical care, and regional planning of Trauma Systems.

Dr. R. Phillip Dellinger
Cooper University Hospital, New Jersey

Dr. R. Phillip Dellinger is Head, Division of Critical Care Medicine; Director, Medical/Surgical ICU; Professor of Medicine (Robert Wood Johnson Medical School) at Cooper University Hospital, Camden, New Jersey. Dr. Dellinger was president Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) 1998-1999. He is senior editor for the SCCM’s journal, Critical Care Medicine. He created the SCCM Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) course. Dr. Dellinger has authored over 300 journal articles, films and book chapters in the fields of critical care medicine and pulmonary disease, both laboratory and clinical research. He co-edited the 2nd and recently published 3rd edition of Critical Care Medicine (Mosby) textbook. Dr. Dellinger chaired the 1997 National Institutes of Health/American College of Chest Physicians workshop, “The Future of Sepsis Research”. He was committee co-chair for the 2004 Surviving Sepsis Campaign Guidelines on the Management of Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock and chair for the 2008 revision.

Kathleen A. Dracup, RN, FNP, DNSc, FAAN
Dean and Endowed Professor in Nursing Education
University of California, San Francisco, School of Nursing

Dr. Dracup's professional career includes experience in cardiovascular clinical nursing and university professorships. She is recognized nationally and internationally for her investigation in the care of patients with heart disease and the effects of this disease on spouses and other family members. She has tested a variety of interventions designed to reduce the emotional distress experienced by cardiac patients and their family members and to reduce morbidity and mortality from sudden cardiac death. Dr. Dracup has published her research in more than 300 articles and chapters, and has recently published the textbook, Intensive Coronary Care. She served as the editor of Heart & Lung, is the co-editor of the American Journal of Critical Car and associate editor for the Journal of Cardiac Failure.

Dr Bin Du, MD
Professor and Director of Medical ICU
Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Beijing, China

Dr Bin Du is the Secretary General of Asia Pacific Association of Critical Care Medicine (APACCM), and the Secretary General of Chinese Society of Critical Care Medicine (CSCCM). He works actively in improving academic exchange between China and other professional authorities, such as SCCM, ESICM, and APACCM. His research interest includes nosocomial infection, evaluation of severity-of-illness, and hemodynamic monitoring.

A/Prof Charles Gomersall
Associate Professor, Dept of Anaesthesia & Intensive Care
The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Charles trained in medicine and anaesthesia in London and in Intensive Care in Hong Kong. His research interests include triage, antibiotic pharmacokinetics, probiotics and respiratory protection and an enforced interest in respiratory epidemics. Charles is the editor of ICU web, which is a free access Internet website (www.aic.cuhk.edu.hk/web8) and also chairman of the BASIC steering group (www.aic.cuhk.hk/web8/BASIC).

Dr Daren Heyland
Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology
Queen’s University, Ontario, Canada

Dr Daren Heyland is a Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario Canada. He is trained in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Clinical Epidemiology. He works as a staff physician in the ICU at the Kingston General Hospital and serves as Director of Research for the Critical Care Programme and the Director of the Clinical Evaluation Research Unit at the Kingston General Hospital. He has a variety of research interests including end of life care, sepsis, and the interaction between the gastrointestinal tract, infection and nutrition in critical illness.

Professor Hiroyuki Hirasawa, MD, PhD
Professor Emeritus, Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine
Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine, Japan

Professor Hirasawa graduated from Chiba University School of Medicine in 1966 and joined the Department of Surgery in the same medical school. He graduated from Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine in 1970. His chief interest in surgical practice was surgical critical care. He also studied surgery in the Departments of Surgery, New York University School of Medicine and Yale University during 1975 to 1978. He moved to the Department of Emergency and Critical Care Medicine, Chiba University School of Medicine in 1984 as the first Chairman of the Department. He is one of the founding members of the Japan Society for Blood Purification in Critical Care, and is now serving as one of co-chairs of the 2008 Annual Meeting of the Society of Critical Care Medicine being held in Honolulu. Professor Hirasawa is also the immediate past President of the Japanese Society of Intensive Care Medicine.

Professor Gavin Joynt

Gavin Joynt is currently a Professor in the Department of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care, The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He obtained his specialist qualifications in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care in South Africa before receiving the FHKCA(IC) and FJFICM. He is Chairman of the Board of Intensive Care (Hong Kong College of Anaesthesiologists). His research interests include Ethics, Education, Infection Control, Antibiotic Pharmacokinetics, Monitoring and Tissue Perfusion.

Dr Shin Ok Koh, MD, PhD
Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, South Korea

Dr Koh was born in Korea in 1949. She graduated from Yonsei University College of Medicine in 1975. She has worked in the Intensive Care Unit as a facuty of Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at Yonsei University College since 1983. Her current positions include President of Asia Pacific Association of Critical Care Medicine and Chairperson and Professor, Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Yonsei University College of Medicine. She is also the Director, Anesthesia and Pain Research Institute, Yonsei University College of Medicine and Chief of ICUs, Severance Hospital, Yonsei University Health System, Seoul, Korea.

Professor Younsuck Koh, MD, PhD, FCCM
University of Ulsan College of Medicine, South Korea

Dr. Koh is Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Asan Medical Center, the University of Ulsan College of Medicine in Korea. He has published 47 articles in SCI journals and over 150 scientific articles and reviews in peer review journals. His broad research interests include acute lung injury, inhaled nitric oxide therapy, mechanical ventilation, sepsis, and medical ethics. He is a highly regarded speaker in critical care in Asia. He currently serves as President-elect of Korean Society of Critical Care Medicine, and vice President of Korean Academy of Medical Ethics Education.

Professor Xavier Leverve
Professor of Medicine

Professor Leverve is the Professor of Medicine (Nutrition and Intensive Care, Department of Acute Medicine) at the Université Joseph Fourier andthe Director of INSERM-U884 research Unit, Bioénergétique Fondamentale et Appliquée. He is also the Scientific Director for Human Nutrition and Food Safety at the National Institute of Agronomical Research. Xavier is qualified in Internal Medicine, Medical Intensive Care and Human Nutrition. He also has a PhD in Human Biology and Biochemistry. He is currently the Chairman of "Conseil National des Universités" (CNU) 44th section, 4th sub-section (nutrition).

Greg Martin, MD, MSc
Assistant Professor of Medicine
Emory University, Atlanta

Greg Martin, MD, MSc is Assistant Professor of Medicine at Emory University in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care. Dr. Martin completed undergraduate studies at Duke University; medical school, residency and fellowship training at Vanderbilt University; post-graduate Master of Science degree at Emory University. Dr. Martin conducts clinical and translational research in critically ill patients, with his primary interests being in sepsis, organ dysfunction syndromes and acute lung injury (ALI) or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Dr. Martin is the Section Head of Pulmonary and Critical Care, Director of the Medical and Coronary ICU's at Grady Memorial Hospital.

Patricia A. Moloney-Harmon, RN, MS, CCNS, CCRN, FAAN
Advanced Practice Nurse/Clinical Nurse Specialist, Children’s Services
Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, USA

Patricia Moloney-Harmon is an Advanced Practice Nurse/Clinical Nurse Specialist for Children's Services, at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, Maryland, USA. She provides consultation to the nursing staff regarding pediatric critical care and emergency issues. Patricia has lectured both nationally and internationally in the area of pediatric critical care and nursing leadership. She is co-editor of the textbooks, Critical Care Nursing of Infants and Children and Nursing Care of the Pediatric Trauma Patient. She is a past board member of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and past board member of the World Federation Pediatric Intensive Critical Care Societies (WFPICCS).

Professor Jean-Louis Vincent, MD, PhD, FCCM

Jean-Louis Vincent is Head of the Department of Intensive Care at the Erasme University Hospital in Brussels and Professor of intensive care at the University of Brussels. He has authored or co-authored more than 500 peer-reviewed publications, more than 70 books, and more than 870 chapters, letters and abstracts. He is editor-in-chief of Critical Care, Current Opinion in Critical Care and ICU Management, and member of the Editorial Board of more than 30 international journals, including Critical Care Medicine (senior editor), PLoS Medicine, American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Intensive Care Medicine, Lancet Infectious Diseases, Chest, Shock, PLOS Medicine and Journal of Critical Care. He is a past President of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the European Shock Society, and the Past-Chairman of the International Sepsis Forum.

Dr Walley
Professor, University of British Columbia

Dr. Walley received his MD from the University of Manitoba in 1981 and subsequently trained in Internal Medicine at McGill University and trained in Critical Care Medicine at the Unversity of Chicago. He has been a practicing Intensivist and investigator at St. Paul’s Hospital and the University of British Columbia since 1988. The focus of Dr. Walley's research is to investigate the mechanism of decreased left ventricular contractility during sepsis and to investigate the role of genotype on patient outcomes in sepsis and systemic inflammatory states.

Dr Ian Seppelt FANZCA FJFICM
Senior Staff Specialist
The Nepean Hospital

Ian is a Senior Specialist in Intensive Care at Nepean Hospital in Sydney, with interests including critical care echocardiography, sedation, neurocritical care, research ethics and clinical trial methodology. He is secretary of the ANZICS Clinical Trials Group and actively involved in many of the large multicentre trials in intensive care medicine. He is Director of the newly established Sydney West Clinical Research Centre, as well as an examiner for the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine.
